Apply what you learn in the classroom by immersing yourself in real-world experiences that enhance your knowledge and build skills for future success. AU provides opportunities for all students- from first years through to graduate students– to forge your own path and select experiences that will best prepare you for what comes next.

In your Complex Problems seminar—part of AU Core—you examine a variety of perspectives and practice thinking like a scholar. You’ll have unique out-of-class experiences and in-class discussions with field experts.

Career Readiness

Explore your current or intended career field through internships and supervised practical experiences. Apply what you have learned in class through hands-on job experience while earning credit in most situations. In 2022, 86 percent of AU undergraduate students and 48 percent of graduate students participated in an internship.

In the Community

Students volunteer at a community service event

AU students serve the community through new student activities like Explore DC, and math and literacy tutoring through DC Reads. You may also receive academic credit for service-learning. Our Center for Community Engagement and Service connects you with community-based learning opportunities.

In the Classroom

Many classes feature unique experiential learning labs. Using Washington, DC as an extension of the classroom, you’ll have opportunities to visit government agencies, cultural institutions, and non-profit organizations to see real-life applications of what you’ve learned in class.

Quantitative Methods for Journalists (COMM 260) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This class teaches students how to build and analyze databases from a journalist point of view. Students learn how to request and analyize data, find a story within the data, pitch the story, write the lead, and create a reporting plan for how they would write the story.

Digital Skills (COMM 305) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Students are given a camera and learn to go out and use it. Students start with still photography with access to cameras from AU's extensive inventory of professional equipment. In the classroom students work on photography skills where every class is hands on learning camera fuctions, shooting opportunities, and edit photos. Students also have an opportunity to learn pod casting and video technology while completeing a project needed in the community.
Reporting (COMM 320) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Professional training in news gathering, writing, and news judgment for traditional news and new media platforms. Study of news sources, ethical reporting techniques, fieldwork, research, and interview methods for print, web, broadcast, and their convergence. Learning the mission of journalism in democracy. Experiential Learning opportunities include producing local stories to be submitted in campus media like TheWash.org, The Eagle, Black Print, and other AU publications. Students are encouraged to attend events, go to advisory neighborhood commissions where residents contact with their local government. Students are responsible for getting the full story, including interviewing residents on the record.
Digital Audio and Podcast Production (COMM 385) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Writing, reporting, interviewing, and digital editing of audio stories. The class emphasizes audio news production, narrative and non-narrative storytelling. Students work under deadline, creating radio newscasts and/or podcasts, and build an online portfolio of audio, web stories. Experiential learning opportunities include the production of weekly newscasts with students rotating through each role of the production.

Backpack Video Journalism (COMM 432 or 632) SOC Any In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Instruction in shooting, editing, and producing of video stories; merging of script, video, and graphics into the final product. Working alone or in small teams, students learn to use digital cameras, microphones, lights, tripods, field shooting techniques, and nonlinear editing. Understanding the Media (COMM 100) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Building on students' individual and collective experiences of mass media (print, film, radio, television, and digital media), this course analyzes 91ÖÆƬ³§ media institutions: their development and social role; the economic and political constraints they face; and their effect on us as a society and as individuals. Experiential Learning opportunities include partnerships with 91ÖÆƬ³§ organizations or offices to identify and raise awareness for important initiatives by creating an effective advertisement. Students reflect on their experience to define their position in the organization; explain the knowledge, skills, and talents required in the work they are doing; compare what they have learned in the classroom to the field experience; share the experience in class and online discussions; and articulate the key lessons of the field experience in a classroom presentation. Learn the strategic concepts behind public relations and the ways that professionals practice it. Topics include audience targeting and research, message development, media relations, and using all possible tactics, including traditional and social media, to reach people and communicate with them. Students see how public relations works in such areas as business, society, entertainment, sports, and politics, among others, and learn how public relations professionals deal with crises, communications challenges, and different publics. Public Relations Case Studies (COMM 346) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Students review, discuss, and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of multiple public relations campaigns across disciplines. They gain familiarity with research methods, strategies, and tactics used in the PR toolbox as well as an understanding of when and how to use them. Experiential Learning opportunities include real world job experience by where students prepare to host an event. Students are placed into departments to plan and build the run of show, strategize and secure partnerships, develop marketing and advertising plans, and execute all operational aspects to host a successful event.
Digital Media and Culture (COMM 365) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course examines the role that digital media technologies play in culture and society. It presents historical and contemporary theories about how digital media enable practices through which individual identity is formed, social relations manifest, political discourse occurs, and economic power flows. It draws attention to the significance of digital media in reinforcing legacies of oppression and structures of marginalization, as well as their potential for social activism and change. Experiential Learning is core to this class as students create podcasts, videos, post their work on websites and in social media.
Intro to Communication Research Methods (COMM 378) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Media and communication are central to our understanding of public affairs as well as how we conduct our private lives. This course provides students with the essential skills they need to study media technologies, media industries, and the communicative processes they engender. They learn how to analyze news content, scrape and study web and social media data, and conduct interviews, surveys, and experiments to examine media consumption habits and its effects on the public's social and political behaviors. They also develop a critical appreciation for rigorous quantitative and qualitative social research. Experiential Learning is core to this class as students make and build research by survey, interviews, collecting qualitative and quantitative date, audience studies, experimental design, literature review, and other tools and methods in an anthropology type approach to collecting data. Students also workshop their research papers in a peer review process which is critical in the academia. Lastly, students become proficient in important industry related software, Atlas.ti.
Public Communication Research (COMM 380) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course teaches a range of research methods that are essential to careers in public relations and strategic communication. Students develop quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, learn how to formulate research questions, and develop and execute a research design including sampling, measurement, data collection, and interpretation of results. Using methods such as surveys, experiments, content analysis, and focus groups, students learn to harness the power of data to address complex questions, including through the use of relevant analysis software packages. Finally, they apply the results to solve strategic communication problems and learn to present research findings compellingly to a range of audiences. Experiential Learning opportunity includes working with a live or simulated client to deliver a Top Line Report that can be implemented by the organization.
Social Media Strategies and Tactics (COMM 408) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course focuses on understanding how organizations, including corporations, nonprofits, and the government employ digital strategic communications in their public relations outreach. Search engine marketing, mobile communications, and viral campaigns are examined. The course features case studies, use of social media tools, and experts in social media from various fields. Experiential Learning opportunities include work with a real client to develop a strategic communication plan based on their needs. Guest speakers also provide current best practices and potential work opportunities.

Fundamentals of News Design (COMM 417) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course explores publication design and visual storytelling, including the display of quantitative informational graphics. The course covers design principles, photography and video, mapping, color and typography. Public Relations Portfolio (COMM 437) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course gives students the opportunity to apply lessons learned and serves as the capstone for their program. Students work with a real-world client as part of a team to address a specific communication challenge. They produce a strategic proposal and a variety of creative work, such as social media campaigns, event concepts, product launches, public service announcements, websites, news releases, brochures, or media relations campaigns, as needed for corporate, nonprofit, or government clients. In some cases, based on the client's needs, the emphasis is on executing the strategy and producing deliverables. Experiential Learning is core to this course.
Crisis Communication (COMM 441) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course examines the nature of issue and crisis management from the strategic communication perspective. Students study various issues, risk and crisis situations, as well as the current literature on strategic issue, risk, and crisis communication methods. Students develop a crisis communication plan for a chosen organization. Experiential Learning opportunities include site visits to local government and police to learn about handling of sensitive information during major events inclusive of the events at the Capitol on January 6th.
Communication, Copyright and Culture (COMM 467) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course focuses on the social, political, and cultural implications of copyright law. The course examines questions including how creative works became commodified, what impact this has on the way we view the world, and how this changes in light of the rapid innovations in the way culture is produced and consumed. Experiential Learning opportunities in this class include meeting with domain experts like senior officials in the US Copyright Office and the Library of Congress, NGOs, prominent lawyers and artists. Students are required to create an original work of expression, register it with the copyright office and engage in every process of the bureaucratic system.
Digital Strategic Communication Analytics and Certifications (COMM 469) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Today's strategic communication professionals are required to understand the integral role digital and social strategy plays for organizations. This course prepares students to obtain certification in social media monitoring and digital analytics platforms, such as Meltwater and Google Analytics. This course focuses on how media in all forms, from mainstream TV and newspapers to blogs, political ads and web sites, have an impact on politics; how political actors seek to promote their messages and campaigns; and how the intersection of politics and media influences public opinion and public policy. Students learn to use research for planning and evaluating strategic communication initiatives and campaigns. It provides an in-depth comparative analysis of theoretical approaches from a variety of academic fields including mass communication, cultural studies, film criticism, and digital media. Weekend Video Backpack SOC Any In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Students complete 3-5 video stories over the course of a Saturday. Advanced Directing (COMM 636) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This intensive course takes a holistic approach to directing, including script analysis, rehearsing and working with actors, staging for the camera, visual design, and shooting style, pacing and editing. The course is designed as a director's laboratory where students practice a variety of skills and approaches, with an emphasis on strong performances and effective visual storytelling. Students focus on directing a single piece, either an original short script, targeted excerpts from a thesis project, a portion of a feature screenplay, or an adaptation of a short play.
Backpack Documentary (COMM 560) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course reflects the transformation in visual storytelling made possible by technological advances. It is built on the premise that a properly trained practitioner can tell powerful character-driven stories using hand-held cameras for more intimate, more immediate communication than with conventional camera and crew. It includes the tools and techniques used by journalists and documentary filmmakers for effective backpack journalism. Experiential Learning is core to this class. Community Documentary: Stories of Transformation (COMM 400 or 600) SOC Any In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven In this advanced documentary production course, students collaborate with a local storyteller within a DC-based, non-profit organization to produce a short documentary. Students also study the wider social forces impacting DC residents such as homelessness, gentrification and urban inequality. These resulting films become part of a wider community storytelling initiative at the Community Voice Lab, and can be used in public meetings, websites, and elsewhere to mobilize communities and empower the storytellers and organizations alike. Cross Cultural Film and Video Production (COMM 556) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven In this interdisciplinary course students learn about the challenges of producing films internationally. Students work both independently and in small production teams and with students from Tecnologico de Monterrey University in Mexico and other universities to produce documentaries of cultural, social, and environmental interest. Students have the opportunity to travel and work as international production teams in Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba, Wales, or another location determined by professor during spring break. Game Development I (GAME 615) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course introduces students to computer game development, techniques, implementation, and programming. While much of the course focuses on technical and programming skills including key game algorithms, artificial intelligence, graphics, and interface design, students are also exposed to the artistic and production-oriented aspects of game development. Working in small groups, students design and develop a game.
Game Development II (GAME 625) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven Advanced game development, including procedural content generation. This course gives students the tools and inspiration to create new types of computer games. The course exposes students to problems typically faced in game development and then explores solutions. Students create two prototypes and a final project employing emerging practices in game development.
Game Prototyping (GAME 601) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course serves as an introduction to game production and develops theoretical foundations, methods, and skills of building games. Students learn how contemporary computer games are constructed, applying standard techniques for developing ideas, testing prototypes, identifying assets, communicating design, and developing a small scale playable demo.
Game Research Methods (GAME 610) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course facilitates a thorough understanding of research techniques, best practices, and evaluation for purpose-driven game design. Through critical reading of late-breaking research, discussion, and analysis, students learn to accurately assess the efficacy of a game design, construct design play studies, and assess the value of specific research claims. History of Photography (COMM 477) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven A survey of the development of photographic imagery from its advent in the early nineteenth century through contemporary twentieth century work. Includes history of photography globally. Emphasis is on viewing work in Washington galleries and museums. Students learn the importance and power of visual image in communicating ideas and information. Producing Film and Video (COMM 413 or 613) SOC Any In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven The business of fiction and nonfiction filmmaking with an emphasis on intellectual property/copyright, the development of a proposal, fundraising, marketing and distribution; practical work on scheduling, budgets and other production management topics such as unions and guilds, hiring a crew, releases, and music rights. Television Studio Production (COMM 435) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven A hands-on laboratory course. Teaches basic studio skills, including director, technical director, audio engineer, teleprompter operator, floor manager, and camera operator as well as original production planning. Teamwork and professionalism are emphasized in the creation of an original short webisode series for NBC-4 or another client and an original television series. The Design of Play (GAME 600) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course develops foundations in theory and skills in understanding the social sciences of play. Students analyze, critique, and design interactive experience and games. The understanding and design of fun and play is informed by a variety of disciplines that include psychology, art, and science.

Visual Literacy (COMM 105) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course introduces students to ways of understanding visual media through instruction in the fundamental principles of 2-D design, photography, and film/video. Students learn visual theory and immerse themselves in new ways of seeing; understand the impact of images in various forms and contexts; critically deconstruct images created by others while producing images of their own; and come to appreciate the influences of visual symbols on communication. Experiential Learning opportunity includes applying Community Based Research and Learning (CBRL) methodology to a community partner project. Students are required to produce all aspects of this film project.
Writing for Interactivity (GAME 675) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course examines storytelling strategies for digital games and other interactive media forms. This is a hands-on course that focuses on story-driven, single- and multi-player experiences in the context of storytelling across media. It introduces students to the design and development of narrative games and media experiences including conceptualization, foundational narrative design strategies, and putting these designs in practice through the authorship and delivery of project-based work. Particular attention is paid to both pre- existing and emergent development practices and technologies, as well as how writing for interactivity relates to more traditional dramatic writing and current research in the field.

Writing the Documentary Film (COMM 483) SOC Undergrad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This course emphasizes writing for documentary film, through all phases and for a wide range of documentary genres and styles. Students examine case studies, screen and discuss films, and explore the writing process from idea to treatment, from shooting script to final script. A series of shorter assignments culminates in each student writing a half-hour original documentary script. Guest speakers share their experience with the class. Writing the Short Film (COMM 506) SOC Grad In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven This intermediate course examines the principles of dramatic storytelling as they apply to the short form. The class focuses on structure, characterization, visual scene writing, the development of theme, and how to craft effective dialogue. Students learn through practice by writing short scripts, and by analyzing several short films. Experiential Learning is core to this class.
