Small Changes, Big Impact Reducing Single-Use Plastic

Benefits of Reusable Water Bottles

Join us in choosing reusables! All incoming students will be provided a reusable water bottle when they arrive on campus, and the rest of our campus community can contribute by bringing their own reusable bottle with them.Ìý

91ÖÆƬ³§ is committed to limiting plastics on campus, as part of our goal to achieve zero waste by 2030. When you choose a reusable water bottle, mug, or utensil, you are contributing directly to our sustainability goals. Small changes have a big impact.

Reusable water bottles:

  • Decrease single-use plastic waste, helping to protect oceans, wildlife, and natural ecosystems.
  • Reduce energy and water useÌýin the production and disposal of plastic bottles.
  • EliminateÌýthe need for purchasing single-use plastic bottles daily, saving money in the long run.Ìý

What is single-use plastic?

Single-use plastics are items that are used once and immediately thrown away. It is often found in packaging and service ware, including bottles, wrappers, utensils, and bags. of the 300 million tons of plastic produced every year around the world is used for single-use items.ÌýÌý

Why does AU have a goal to eliminate single-use plastic?

Single-use plastics are harmful for the environment. They do not break down and are tricky to recycle properly. Instead of decomposing, they break up into tiny pieces of plastic called microplastics, which end up in our waterways. Microplastics are so ubiquitous in the environment, they’ve been found at the bottom of the .Ìý

Single-use plastics have negative impacts on human and animal health too. People ingest about a credit card worth of plastic each week and exposure to plastic and the chemicals added to plastic has been linked to negative health impacts.

Small Changes, Big Impact: Get Involved

The easiest, quickest way to help reduce single-use plastics on campus is to use your reusables. Bring your reusable mug to get coffee, carry reusable utensils in your backpack, take reusable totes with you to the grocery store, and refill your reusable water bottle as many times as you need.Ìý

Students are invited to sign our EcoPledge to commit to reducing single-use plastics in your daily life, and staff and faculty can join our Green Office program to bring your colleagues on board. Use the Green Event Guidelines when planning an event too.Ìý
